Profile: John Mathews, Managing Director, Fieldguard Limited
John has spent most of his life working with horses and in trades directly related to horses. He learnt to ride as a young child, and his first involvement in horse racing began as a Saturday stablehand at the age of 13.
He learnt much from Willie Stephenson, who at the time was the only living English racehorse trainer to train an Epsom Derby AND a Grand National winner. He later worked for Geoff Lewis, who won the Derby on Mill Reef in 1971.
John moved into sales, working for an equestrian wholesale distributor and became Manager of Harrods riding department in the mid-’90s. John also spent time helping to run a livery yard in Surrey, living on-site at the time.
John rode many winners in quarter-horse racing for Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Fieldguard. He joined the company, bringing with him a wealth of experience and sales know-how, and is now the owner and Managing Director.
John says,
I have been lucky to have worked with some of the very best in the equestrian world during my career, and it is a real privilege to be now running Fieldguard Limited, which was founded on the principle of providing the very best products for the safety and comfort of horses.
