Permanent Fence

This is an example but scale to your needs. For a 75m x 50m square field (approximately one acre) with one gate opening and two runs of 40mm tape:

  • 1 x 500m reel of 40mm tape R4
  • 90 x insulators R8
  • 1 x 200 screws R8X
  • 10 x tensioners R36V
  • 2 x gates R11
  • 1 x energiser
  • 45 x 2 1/2” diameter softwood stakes (Purchased locally)
  • 5 x 3 1/2” softwood posts (Purchased locally)
  • (cable if mains only energiser) (R59B)
  • 1 x power connector R59C
  • (1 x voltmeter/tester) (R18)

Moveable Fence

  • 90 x insulators R8
  • 1 x 200 screws R8X
  • 10 x tensioners R36V
  • 2 x gates R11
  • 1 x energiser
  • 45 x glass fibre stakes R7A (horses)
  • 1 x stake driver R49
  • 5 x 3 1/2” softwood posts (Purchased locally)
  • (cable if mains only energiser) (R59B)

Fencing solution for Dog containmentDogs, Fox, Geese, Wading Birds, Goats and Sheep

Fieldguard glass fibre stakes (R7A cut into four) with pigtails (R17F), or small wood stakes each with pigtails (R17V) or normal insulators (R8).

Sheep, goats and dogs are well insulated and will tend to escape from a tape enclosure until they have been “bitten”. It is advisable either to lead them up to the fence to be shocked – making sure that they are not allowed to crawl under the fence but are immediately pulled back behind it – or to make a small initial training pen of 3-4 runs of tape. Thereafter they will take pains never to come into contact with the fence again.

One run of either 20mm or 40mm tape is needed fixed either to the Fieldguard glass fibre stakes (R7A cut into four) with pigtails (R17F), or small wood stakes each with pigtails (R17V) or normal insulators (R8). The fixing of all the above is exactly as for horse fencing.

Deer

Fallow and red deer, three runs of 40mm tape are required and can be arranged in one of two ways:

1) As a single fence with the runs at 1.2m, 0.7m, and 0.4m

2) As a back fence of two runs with the top run 0.9m above ground and the second run 0.6m high, plus a fore fence with a single run 0.3m above ground. A very powerful energiser is necessary.

Roe deer require a more complex tape arrangement to achieve 100% success.

Horses, Ponies, Camelids, Donkeys and Cattle

Horses will not fight over, chew, rub or lean on a Fieldguard fence. For these reasons it is advisable to complete their enclosure in tape by using it for all openings (tape is also far cheaper than solid gates.) Openings can be up to 5m wide and the tape gate allows the extraction of the animal whilst holding others back in the field. The fence enables non-compatible animals to live beside each other in safety.

Except when securing to an existing fence (barbed wire/post and rail), a single run of tape is inadvisable as the animals will graze under it using their manes as insulators. They will then bolt forward when “bitten” at the withers. Horses are creatures of flight and are long-sighted. The minimum width they can see when in panic is 40mm. Cosmetic reasons aside, two runs of tape are sufficient with the top run 1m (3’3”) above the ground.

The system is ideal as a long-term safe fence. If replacing wire or barbed wire, the existing stakes can be left in situ and re-used for Fieldguard. It is very simple to self-erect as a movable fence to restrict grazing or to sub-divide fields.

Many customers install a permanent ring fence but substitute tensioners (R36V) for insulators at specific places along the fence. This enables them to arrange internal fencing using the glass fibre stakes (R7A) to suit varying needs.

Horses have different eyesight to humans and can see natural colours most easily. White, blue and orange are unnatural pigments and are far less visible to them than brown or green.
